Antenna Web is a cool site that shows you where broadcasting stations are located in your area. The site will also ask you to check a box if your antenna will be installed more than thirty feet off the ground. Fox, ION and Daystar were some of the available cable channels that came up with this option. However, when I went back and checked the feet-or-higher option, the available channels went up to 56 from 14 different over-the-air stations and included TBN and a few others.
So, an HDTV antenna could definitely be the way to go for if you want free basic cable channels, especially if you live in a major metropolitan city or nearby suburb. In fact, when I checked Antenna Web again and searched under the ZIP code of our former city, my viewing options went up to 73 channels from twenty different over-the-air stations, all because I typed in an address closer to the cities.
Using Antenna Web to get the broadcasting stations that are available in your area will be a great first start as it will give you more information so that you can make an informed decision about what type of antenna to buy.
The type of antenna that will work best for you depends on a variety of factors. After we talk about what the three main types of antennas do, I can help you in how to decide which one is best for your individual TV viewing situation.
A directional antenna focuses all its power in one general direction. If all or the majority of the broadcasting towers are located in the same direction from your house, a directional antenna should work fine. The next question you will want to ask yourself is whether you want an indoor antenna or an outdoor antenna.
Indoor antennas are installed inside of your house or apartment somewhere, while outdoor antennas are installed obviously outdoors, usually on the roof of a house. Similarly, even if you do own your town-home, condominium or apartment, you may have to check HOA rules regarding installing an antenna outside of your home. Some developments with Homeowners associations may have rules about what can or cannot be installed outside of your dwelling — even if you own a single-family home.
While this knowledge can influence your purchasing decision, you may want to know that if you live close to or inside of a major city you might not get any more channels with an outdoor antenna than you would with an indoor antenna simply because of the close proximity to broadcasting stations.
Those living further out, however, will almost certainly be able to access more broadcasting channels with an outdoor antenna. However, there are some other options for getting basic cable channels for free as well. Then unplugged everything from my older flat screen TV. Been two years without cable of any kind. Occasionally move antenna and rescan. Must say however I did eventually invest in one of those 30 dollar flat antennas you put in the window to get better reception and I got it.
Never used it because we had cable. Just moved and cable is too expensive, so I thought about the paperclip and then remembered I had the rabbit ears. The U-shaped clips had been stripped off, so I was able to twist the exposed wires to create a single input wire and stick it into the cable hole of our flat-screen kitchen TV.
Thank you, Beth! I just tried this hack on my TV and it picked up over 40 channels but there is no picture or sound. I get a square box in the middle of the TV that says Audio Only on some channels. I have re-scanned for channels several times but get the same result. I also tried hooking the tv up to an antenna but all I got was no-signal. I have the right antenna, researched where the broadcast tower is and best antenna for my location but no -signal.
I have moved the antenna and tv to other locations in the house but still no signal. I even tried the antenna with a different tv but still got no signal. What is frustrating about this is I live in an area that is slight hilly. I am at a higher elevation than these two neighbors and I get no signal. My cable bill just went up There has to be a way cut the cable cord once and for all. It could be a combination of things like the TV, the direction you face, the distance from the towers, the makeup of your home which blocks the signal, etc.
I have read the article on how to get free T. Can you help me to get this going. I would love to stick it to the cable companies who like to charge an arm and leg for there so called service. The best way would be to do a search for your TV model number and add manual at the end. All fine and dandy until the cable company does a tap audit and decides to come after you for cable theft.
I get it cable is expensive, but so is the infrastructure that delivers the service. And leeching on the infrastructure can actually degrade the quality of service for paying subscribers. Not worth it folks.
Trust me. This is in my own home that I do technically pay for, although my television decodes additional channels in-between the normal stations. You need to find the manual for your particular television and look up how to manually scan for channels using the cable not the antenna option.
