It was the song that turned heads when he started playing it for people, because it sounds like nothing the band had done before yet perfectly of a piece with its ethos.
They're through being cool, through doubting themselves, and through wasting time on ancillary things. TPC is self-titled, almost, because it's Tokyo Police Club circa —scarred but smarter, fully re-energized. The expectation was just that we'd do something that would make us happy. There's an excitement and optimism. Let's just let it exist. Also in that moment I moved to New York and I was seeing someone new and my whole life went from everyday with Tokyo Police Club in the studio to something completely different, so I had a lot of stuff to write about for the next year.
Q How could you tell these songs were not the right fit for the band? I played them for the guys and they were totally supportive and excited that I would do stuff on my own. Q In your mind, what differentiates your solo material from the group? How do I get the Nintendo sounds into the chorus? I always liked hearing solo versions of the Beatles songs or when Tom Petty would play with and without a band.
